Social justice advocate and civil rights activist Vanda Trappio Patton was recently hospitalized in Savannah, Georgia (USA) for the assessment and treatment of stress-related issues and is now undergoing physical therapy and recovery counseling at a rehabilitation clinic.
“I know a lot of people have been trying to call and I haven‘t been able to respond to everybody’s messages but I want them to know I appreciate their love and prayers,” said Ms. Patton. She added, “Please keep praying for me and I’ll keep praying for you too.”
Long known as one of the all-important “foot soldiers” of the civil rights movement in Savannah, Patton has worked and marched alongside such influential figures as: Rep. John Lewis (D-GA 5th District), Rev. Jesse Jackson, former Atlanta mayor Andrew Young, and the late civil rights leaders Martin Luther King Jr., Julian Bond, Hosea Williams, and Dick Gregory.

In addition, she is well known as a supporter of the cultural arts and as a staunch advocate of higher education for African Americans. In recent years, she has founded a number of scholarships under the aegis of historic organizations like the Order of the Eastern Star and Heroines of Jericho.
One such scholarship fund was established in honor of George Franklin Patton Jr., her late husband and the grandfather of hip-hop superstar Big Boi, famed as a Grammy-award winning member Outkast, solo-recording artist, and actor.
